The rationale for writing this book emanated from the authors’ collective personal philosophy, the current crisis in public education, and the conviction that solutions can and must be found. This philosophy has been derived from their sharing of their personal experiences and the knowledge they acquired in teaching diverse, usually minority, and poor populations at different educational levels. Anchoring this philosophy are certain premises. One is that great teachers are made and not just born. Like great tennis or orchestral playing, great teaching appears as a seamless whole, but in actuality, it is composed of many perfectly coordinated skills, knowledge and practices. Another is… concerned with the teacher being the heart of the educative process—everybody else involved is in a supportive role. A third premise is that the same general teaching principles work at every level of the education enterprise, be it early childhood or advanced doctoral studies (one of the authors has taught at every level); in addition, these principles work in every discipline. Constituting a fourth premise is the authors’ absolute belief that learning is color-blind and diversity-blind. As part of this premise is the authors’ own corollary that if students are not learning what the teacher is trying to communicate, then it is the teacher’s fault. The current crisis in education is comprised of problems that have long been brewing. We give a few illustrations here. Perhaps, the most immediate one is that of the teacher shortage, with tremendous teacher shortages in the math, science and reading areas. But right up there with this problem are the problems in both the content and pedagogical preparation of teachers. The colleges of education that are responsible for training teachers have increasingly come under severe criticism for the lack of rigor and the value of the content in their programs and the length of time it takes to certify teachers in pedagogical techniques. Another problem that has risen to the fore is the appalling drop-out rate in those secondary schools serving poor, minority and diverse student populations where teachers are ill-trained for handling both the increasing diversity of the student population and the wide differences in student preparation. The attrition rate in many inner city public schools is exceeding 40% in the high schools and this rate exceeds 80% in the freshman college science and math classes. The achievement scores for secondary students, particularly in the inner city schools, are very low which has created an unparalleled need for remedial courses at the college freshman level, thereby wasting hundreds of millions of dollars for courses that should have be taught in the high schools. The politicians are fully aware of the crisis, but are trying to find solutions, such as achievement testing, that won’t cost too much. And, of course, the problems with funding and governance are always there.Describing the problems is essential to the solution. We contend that the solution will only be found when we tackle the heart of the educative process: the teacher. That is what the main solution proposed in this book is about.
