Jeff DeVore, certified life coach and retired chiropractor and ordained Christian minister, always wondered what was really going on. His family of origin, like all families, had its own set of quirks, and Jeff's innate curiosity often pondered, What is really going on here? Family dynamics did not encourage blunt questions from four-year-olds, and Jeff kept his questions to himself. Fascinated by his stirrings of puberty and its exciting sexual urges, Jeff again wondered, What exactly is going on here? When he was eleven, he posted a note on the family bulletin board, "What does the man have to do with having a baby?" and his dad, a chiropractor, gave him a factual, non-shaming, Sex Ed 101… lecture, complete with textbook drawings. Jeff didn't mention his mysterious, frightening, unmentionable attraction to his male classmates. He suppressed his curiosity about becoming a sex therapist (true Christian people don't need psychology, he was told), tucked his questions and desires away, and pursued classical piano. He married a woman with whom he had three children, became a chiropractor (private practice and clinical educator for twenty-nine years), and an ordained Christian minister (pastoral work for nine years). After seventeen years of marriage, he came out of the closet as a gay man, was divorced, and got on with his life. Except it seemed to go in reverse. He began meeting and dating men his age, but gradually noticed that he was attracted to younger and . . . younger guys. Internet searching led to images of adolescent males, and Jeff felt like he was picking up where he left off three decades prior. an acquaintance requested some images, and like a fool, Jeff gave a disc to what turned out to be an undercover FBI agent and subsequently served fifty-two months of a sixty-month Federal prison sentence for the distribution of child pornography. That mistake had negative effects on family and friends, for which Jeff takes full responsibility. Upon release, Jeff reentered society wearing the label Registered Sex Offender. Human behavior and its motivations and diversity of expressions continued to trigger the question, "What is really going on here?" Wanting to do something positive with his remaining years, Jeff pursued training and was qualified as a certified life coach. He assists and supports people in fulfilling their goals and personal sense of purpose. with the support of family, friends, several therapists, a church, and public speaking and writing groups, Jeff continues his personal work of shifting from illusion to reality and contributing to the well-being of others. Drawing on six decades of asking "What is really going on here?" Jeff invites you to discover your own answers to that question as it relates to your sexuality. May you step into more love, joy, and peace.
