Brother Mateen was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Although being raised in the Brooklyn projects was not considered "the American dream," it was home for him. In his community he was involved in communal events, such as playing music in the parks and working with earlier rap groups from East New York, Brooklyn. At age eighteen Mateen graduated from high school. A year after graduation, Brother Mateen found himself in a whirlwind of unfortunate events. One major and significant event caused Brother Mateen to be arrested of a crime, convicted, and sentenced to decades in the New York State prison system. Brother Mateen was sentenced to twenty years to life. While incarcerated, Brother… Mateen earned associate, bachelor, and master's degrees. He also earned a number of certificates and accolades as well as influenced many incarcerated men to turn their lives around for the betterment of themselves and their communities. Brother Mateen instructed workshops on anger management, antisubstance abuse, and life-skill workshops. Brother Mateen affected many youth through the Youth Assistance Program (i.e., the educational side of "Scared Straight") and JAM (Junior Association of Men), which he founded and directed. Brother Mateen's intention in writing this book is not to convey the typical stories of drugs, violence, sex, and prison behaviors. This book which contains drama, humor, suspense, and food for thought was written to encourage readers to take a second look at life while better navigating their own lives to avoid the pitfalls Brother Mateen experienced. Brother Mateen currently resides in New York. He can make himself available for speaking engagement and looks forward to traveling to your area to bring a powerful message.
