The Meadowlark's Song is the story of a childhood lived by the author within the restrictive culture of a conservative branch of the Mennonite Church. The story takes place on a North Dakota farm during the years of the Great Depression. The people are real and as described; the events actually occurred, and reveal a time and a culture and a way of life for the most part lost to the recorded history of that era.The author has lived as an observant outsider of the Mennonite church throughout her adult life, and thus perhaps sees that culture more clearly than do those who remain within its restrictive covenants.
