Le Comte Lev Nikolaevitch Tolsto, francis en Lon Tolsto (1828-1910), n Iasnaa Poliana en Russie, est un des crivains majeurs de la littrature russe. Tolsto est, avec Fedor Dostoevski, un des gants de la seconde partie de la priode connue comme l'[ge d'or de la littrature russe (dbutant en 1820, avec les premires oeuvres de son cousin Pouchkine, et se terminant en 1880 avec les dernires grandes oeuvres de Dostoevski). Ses oeuvres les plus connues sont les romans La Guerre et la Paix (1863- 1869), Anna Karnine (1877) et Rsurrection (1899). Autres oeuvres comprennent: Enfance (1852), Adolescence (1854), Jeunesse (1855), Les Cosaques (1863) et La Puissance des Tnbres (1887).

Tolstoy's life was defined by moral and artistic seeking and by conflict with himself and his surroundings. Of the old nobility, he began by living the usual, dissipated life of a man of his class; however, his inner compulsion for moral self-justification led him in a different direction. In 1851 he became a soldier in the Caucasus and began to publish even while stationed there (Childhood [1852] and other works). Even more significant were his experiences during the Crimean War: the siege of Sevastopol provided the background for his sketches of human behavior in battle in the Sevastopol Stories (1855--56).
