Born in Chicago, Collom began birdwatching at the age of 11. He graduated from Fraser (Colorado) High School, then attended Forestry School at State A&M.He joined the U.S. Air Force and wrote his first poems in Libya. Having earned an M.A. in English on the GI Bill, Collom has been a free-lance teacher (mostly as
