Playwright Robert Anderson was born in New York City on April 28, 1917. He received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Harvard University. During World War II, he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific. After the war, he adapted plays, movies and novels for radio and television and taught playwriting for the American Theater Wing. He was among the theater's most visible, serious playwrights of the 1950s and 1960s and his plays walked the line between realism and sentimentality.
