Glen Simmons was born in 1916 in Florida. Simmons co-wrote Gladesmen: Gator Hunters, Moonshiners, and Skiffers, a book that details his hunting and trapping experiences deep in the Everglades. Simmons also builds skiffs for modern Everglade explorers, which can be seen at the Florida Folklife Museum in White Springs and at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida in Miami.

Laura A. Ogden is associate professor of anthropology at Florida International University.
