The book is a companion volume to Ulrich Luz's three-volume commentary on the gospel of Matthew, published in America as part of the Hermeneia series. It contains a selection of eighteen of Luz's papers on the first gospel, originally published between 1972 and 2003. Most of them were published in German, so that they remained widely unknown to American readership; two of them are published for the first time in this volume. The essays deal with the main problems of the first gospel, such as narrative structure, sources, christology, discipleship, miracles, ethics and Israel. They offer a comprehensive view of problems which are scattered in the commentary and touched only here and there.
