In the wake of the Brown v. Board decision, many towns especially in the South but throughout the nation set up segregation academies, private schools to which the desegregation ruling did not apply. Those parents looking to avoid the civil rights movement and busing found refuge in the so-called seg academies. What is much less known is that in the 1960s and 1970s, black parents too began seeking alternatives to integrated schools. Articulating a desire for a black studies curriculum, black staff, culturally relevant pedagogy, African American autonomy, and neighborhood pride, they founded and sent their children to private, nationalistic "liberation schools" in inner cities nationwide.…
