Count Leo Tolstoy was born in 1828 on the family estate of Yasnaya Polyana in the Tula province. He married in 1862 & was the father of 13 children. Tolstoy managed the estate of Yasnaya Polyana & ran its peasant schools, while writing his great novels, "War & Peace" (1869) & "Anna Karenina" (1877). He died in 1910.

Leo Tolstoy(18281910) was the author of two of literatures greatest novels, War and Peaceand Anna Karenina. Ronald Wilkshas translated works by Gorky, Gogol, and Chekhov for Penguin Classics. Hugh McLeanhas published widely on Russian literature. Paul Footewas, until his retirement, a university lecturer in Russian and fellow of The Queens College, Oxford.

Ronald Wilks has translated Chekhovs short stories, as well as the work of other Russian writers, for Penguin Classics.John Sutherland teaches English at University College, London and has edited several works for Penguin Classics.
