11 Best-Selling Novels that Started as a National Novel Writing Month Project

Even amid busy classes and upcoming finals, some college students are voluntarily competing in an intense, writing project this month. What on earth could get a student – one who is already navigating their hectic-paced college life – to willingly sign up for more writing? Why NaNoWriMo, of course!

Um, what is NaNoWriMo?

NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is a month-long internet-based writing event in which established authors or aspiring writers commit to writing a 50,000-word novel. Though NaNoWriMo started as a small challenge between friends in the late 90s, it has expanded into a global competition with hundreds of thousands of participants embarking on their writing journey from November 1-30th.

Interested? Don’t let the fact that you’re a tad bit late for the official NaNoWriMo competition keep you from joining in. You can still sign up and even if you don’t finish your novel by the 30th, you’ll have at least broken some ground on a possible future best-seller! Need some inspiration to get started? Here’s a list of best-selling novels whose roots can be traced back to a NaNoWriMo writing adventure.

Book cover for The Night Circus

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called “Le Cirque des Reves,” and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway–a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love–a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands. True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus per-formers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead. Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.
