Sir James Maude Richards, FRIBA (13 August 1907-27 April 1992) was a British architectural writer. James Maude Richards was born in 1907, at Ladypath, Park Lane, Carshalton, Surrey. Educated at Cambridge University, he trained as an architect at the Architectural Association. He worked at J. Lyons & Co., assisting Oliver Percy Bernard, before being sent to work as an architectural assistant for the engineer, Owen Williams. But his main career was as a writer on architecture. As well as publishing many books, he served as editor of the Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971, the longest period in office of any of its editors. Adolf K. Placzek was a distinguished architectural librarian, historian, editor and preservationist. Mr. Placzek transformed the Avery Architectural Library at Columbia University, where he spent 32 years, including 20 as the director, into one of the world's finest repositories of architectural books, drawings and other archival materials. Major architects are covered at length by a leading specialist or scholar of the period. These informative essays provide the main style and viewpoint of the book. Shorter entries give factual information and put into historical perspective the live and work of hundreds of architects, together with such engineers, town planners, m and landscape architects who have made a significant contribution to the development of architecture.
