Description:

The driving theme of Business and Professional Excellence: Keys to Communicating in the Workplace is that to demonstrate excellence as a professional, you must demonstrate excellence as a communicator. Excellence does not equate to merely communicating a message effectively or simply demonstrating communication competencies. Professional excellence means being recognized for your skills as a communicator, serving as a role model to those around you, recognizing your strengths and developing your weaknesses, being audience centered, understanding the context, and possessing the ability to adapt and continually improve.Business and Professional Excellence guides readers through the experiences they will face as they transition from student to professional and eventually to leader. Students will come to understand the role of communication in successfully handling situations like job interviewing, providing feedback to supervisors, and working in teams.á This textánot only discusses some of the greatest challenges students will face in today's modern workplace (e.g., difficult people, negative impacts of technology, work/life balance, corporate health), but it also provides students with communication strategies they can utilize to work toward a solution.á Pertinent issues of today,ásuch as excelling under the pressure of increasingly competitive customer service demands, managing emotions when dealing with irate customers, overcoming stress and burnout, and managing difficult people, are just a few of the topics covered.KEY FEATURES &BAD:amp; BENEFITS:The book's organizational structure walks students through the experiences they will most likely encounter as they enter the workplace and then progress in their careers: entering the workplace (getting the job); developing in the workplace (people and culture skills); excelling in the workplace (technology and leadership); and managing challenges in the workplace (difficult people, work-life balance/corporate health). The organizing feature running throughout the text is KEYS, a process designed to develop students' critical thinking skills and make them more reflexive communicators with the ability to adapt and continually improve:á KEYS: Know yourself, Evaluate the audience and context, Your communication interaction, Step back and reflect. Pedagogical features include:--Chapter-opening real-world case studies that critique, both positively and negatively,áactual cases of business/organizational practices, protocol, etc. The cases are influenced by the authorsÆ business and professional consulting practice, student experiences, and current events. --Instructional feature ôWhat Went Wrong?ö is designed to promote class discussion and critical thinking. --Each chapter connects to the textbookÆs primary organizing theme (KEYS) in such a way as to get students to relate each chapter to a reflective process that encourages best practices in the workplace.--Other features in each chapter include:á terms, discussion questions, and references so readers can study for exams and apply information to their past, current, or future business and professional experiences.
