Designed for the one-semester undergraduate human physiology course, Human Physiology provides students with a deep appreciation of the integrative aspects of human physiology. Integrated throughout, real-world case study problems are introduced in every chapter and are designed to capture students’ imaginations and pique their natural inquisitiveness. The case studies examine normal physiology, but in some cases incorporate disease and pharmacology. Through the use of progressive case studies that are repetitive but grow in complexity, students are encouraged to incorporate the newly learned material into what they are learning, empowering them, improving their confidence and emphasizing the relevance of what they are learning. Cellular communication, the autonomic nervous system, and the endocrine system, systems which control all the other body systems, are introduced early in the text. This thematic emphasis on system control and regulation helps a student think about the process of physiology, asking such important questions as: Where are the sensors? What do they sense? What is the response? Where is the target tissue or cell? What happens at the target? This method introduces students to thinking in a physiological way, i.e. thinking of processes and mechanisms instead of trying to memorize isolated facts. By helping students master the fundamental physiological mechanisms known today, Human Physiology equips them with the skills to integrate the physiological processes that will be discovered in the future.Key Features:-Focuses on reiteration of cellular or physical mechanisms in different systems.-Cellular communication, the autonomic nervous system, and the endocrine system, systems which control all the other body systems, are introduced early in the text.-Incorporates new material not addressed by other texts, such as mitochondrial function and disorders which cause systemic disease.-Provides a framework for understanding the fundamentals of human physiology from protein to organ system, preparing students for advanced physiology, pathophysiology or pharmacology courses.-Provides a foundation for pharmacology and frames physiology in such a way that pharmacology can be readily absorbed by students in future courses.
