I am a board certified obstetrician/gynecologist and I have practiced for 30 years. In 1981, early in my career, it was common practice to encourage patients to minimize alcohol as there were medical risks. In my first years in practice, my father died relatively young at age 74 from ruptured esophageal varices, a complication of excessive alcohol intake. In the last 20 years, the increasing research and data on the health benefits of alcohol, especially red wine, have become more apparent. As I continued to follow the literature and research, my own interest grew not only because I am an active medical practitioner but also because I am a trained chemist (PhD) and an experienced wine… maker. The increasing knowledge and growing insight of the health benefits of wine reminded me of a story told about Albert Einstein. When asked by his assistant why he gave the same physics exam two years in a row to the same class of students, he responded: "Simple! The answers have changed!"
