Both competitions had groups drawn on 12 June 2007 in Auckland, New Zealand. The Men's draw was undertaken by Tim Cahill, while the women's was assisted by Brandi Chastain. New Caledonia's captain, Pierre Wajoka scored a ninth minute penalty against Tahiti in the opening fixture of the games, earning him the distinction of being the scorer of the first goal of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification process. Solomon Islands team mate Commins Menapi completed the tournament's first hat-trick, on his way to a double brace in the game against American Samoa. Later in the day at the same venue, Osea Vakatalesau of Fiji scored the 2010 World Cup's first double hat-trick as his side defeated Tuvalu 160.
