These richly lyrical tales tell of love in all its permutations. In "Queen of Spades," Anna, a successful ophthalmologic surgeon in her 60s, lives with her daughter and her grandchildren in terror of her mother, an autocratic former beauty whose hold on the family is upset by the return of Anna's long-vanished husband. The closeted middle-aged professor in "Angel" marries an uneducated charwoman for the love of her young son, whom he is educating in his own image. The "Dauntless Women of the Russian Steppe" have different views on men, but they are fiercely devoted to one another. And in "Sonechka," a bookworm turned muse turned mother reveals a love and loyalty at once astounding in its generosity and grotesque in its pathos. Their lives and loves playing out under the radar of oppression, Ludmila Ulitskaya's characters are heroes of the quotidian, their stories as funny and tender as they are brilliantly told.

Ludmila Ulitskaya was born in Russia and trained as a geneticist, she turned to writing after she had been stripped of her scientific credentials in the 1970's for translating a banned novel - Leon Uris's Exodus - into Russian. She lives in Moscow.
