Description: GPS For Dummies 2e provides general and practical information about GPS technologies, units, uses and digital mapping. The book is divided into five section: - Section I - All About Digital Maps and GPS - General cartography concepts and principles are presented including digital maps and mapping. - Section II - All About GPS, learning your way around a GPS, geocaching, turning your cell phone and PDA into a GPS receiver - Section III provides information on hardware requirements for mapping, connecting a GPS to a PC, and a number of software packages for creating topographic, aerial photograph, and three dimensional maps. - Section IV discusses free Web-hosted map services - Section V is the classic Dummies series "Part of Tens," with manufacturer-specific GPS projects, listings of applicable Web sites, tips for printing maps, geocache websites, and information on PDAs and digital mapping. -Appendices will include a guide to the various GPS and map manufacturers and the difference between the receivers.. The book will provide essential information and resources so the reader can quickly understand how to use a GPS receiver as well as how to use and make digital maps with your GPS. The purpose isn't to get bogged down in comprehensive details and minutia as seen in some competitive titles. Instead the goal is to distill the content down to what's required to make decisions and quickly get up and running with a product or service, while offering external references to more detailed information. The book also is designed to focus on low-cost software.
