This second edition was triggered in part by the largely surprised reaction by many to the publication of the 1990 census figures, which showed that nearly 7.3 million persons--almost 3 percent of the U.S. population--were Asian Americans. This quantitative change, which came as no surprise to us, seems to have produced a qualitative change not only in the ways in which most Americans regard Asian Americans but also in the ways in which many Asian Americans regard themselves.

Historian Roger Daniels has written numerous books, mostly on immigration history and Japanese-American internment during World War II. He was past president of the Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era and the Immigration History Society. He served as a consultant to the Presidential Commission on the Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians and on the planning committee for the Immigration Museum on Ellis Island. He has also worked with the National Park Service on historic sites and as a historical consultant for many television programs.
