Description:
Betrayal, flamboyant owners, financial ruin, men the stuff of legend, and a fairytale dream come true ... The rich heritage of the Sydney Swans is better than fiction Sally Freud and Mark Cutler trace the history of this huge club from 1982 when it relocated from Melbourne to Sydney all the way through to the end of the 1998 season, kicking off this magnificent tribute with a brief history of the club's humble beginnings in 1897 when it first entered the League as South Melbourne. Flying North for the Winter details, year by year, everything you've ever wanted to know about the club inlcuding exclusive interviews with the players, coaches and club administrators who have all played a part… in makng the Sydney Swans the best team in the game. Jam packed with information and colour and black and white photographs of developments on the field and in the boardroom, Flying North for the Winter details every memorable event like milestone games, including, of course, the swan song of their 1996 Grand Final win, record crowds, scores game by game, awards, injuries, new players and team departures. There is no mass of statistics and figures - Flying North North for the Winter is aimed at every Sydney Swans fan with reader friendly interviews in the words of the players like Tony Lockett, Paul Kelly, Paul Roos, Troy Luff, Barry Round, Dennis Carroll, coaches Rodney Eade, Tom Hafey, Ron Barassi and club President Richard Colless; and anecdotal histories of each year of the club since they crossed the Murray River. This is the first published history of the club since 1987. At the start of 1996 the club's membership was 9525, but by the start of the 1997 season it had grown to 22109 - a huge leap in fans, but also a huge leap in fans with no real formal understanding of the club's history. Flying North for the Winter is about to change all that, as told by all involved in one of the most audacious football journeys. About the authors Sally Freud is a huge Swans supporter and has attended every game for the last four years. On many occasions in the crowds at a game she witnessed a lack of knowledge about the team and was so moved by it that she decided to write a book about it! The research for this book was on a huge scale, sifiting through miles of microfiche, interviews in Sydney and Melbourne with past and present players, coaches, presidents, cheer squads, supporters and basically every bit of material written about the Swans in the last century. Sally is author of Thank You Good Night, and has been a radio announcer, the manager of a comedians agency, a model booker and an advertising producer. She has recently moved to Melbourne with her husband, James Freud (ex-Models) and two sons after 13 years in Sydney. Mark Cutler, award winning broadcaster in sports TV and radio, grew up in Sydney and has lived in Melbourne, Hobart and Perth, working for the ABC. Mark worked side by side with Sally, compiling information, histories and interviews. He independently wrote and produced the AFL video Too Old, Too Slow - the history of Hawthorn Football Club. He currently lives in Melbourne. Sales Points *** There are 70, 000 Sydney Swans supporters in Sydney, and 4,000 registered members in Melbourne, not to mention the huge, nationwide, population of footy buffs in general so there is a HUGE market for this very timely book. *** The Sydney Swans Football Club has given Sally and Mark full assistance and support with the project, and gave them full access to their files, players and photographs. They are prepared to take it on as one of their very own merchandising products, on sale at every Swans stall at every single game and we are working with the Swans marketing team to co-promote the book on the Swans and AFL newsletter mailing lists. ***Swans players will be available to promote the book (signings) which is a huge boon; and we are hoping to launch the book at the first Swans home game. ***Swans fans won't be able
