Kushner, whose first collection of verse appeared in 1957, is a native of Leningrad, and the city---both its physical topography and cultural-literary terrain---is a principal theme in his poetry. Unlike some other poets of his generation, he writes about life's everyday things and favors simple metaphor and the precise turn of phrase. He also writes poetry for children.
