The fantasy-adventure Claymore (2007), takes place in an alternate world where humans are stalked by flesh-eating monsters known as Yomas. Mankind's only defense against these creatures are the Claymores, beings who are half-human and half Yoma. They take the form of women with silver eyes who wander from village to village, hacking Yomas into sashimi with their swords. When Clare, an exceptionally powerful Claymore, kills one Yoma, Raki, a boy whose entire family was destroyed by it, follows her. She initially rejects his friendship, but eventually accepts him as a cook, although Claymores rarely eat or drink. The plot abruptly shifts focus in Episode #5, switching from Clare and Raki to the story of Teresa, the most redoubtable Claymore, who also acquires a follower against her will. Claymore is a fairly standard sword-and-gore fest. The juxtaposition of an icy, butt-kicking herione with a well-intentioned but ineffectual cook may remind otaku of Burst Angel. (Rated TV MA, suitable for ages 16 and up: violence, violence against women, brief nudity, potentially offensive religious imagery) --Charles Solomon (1. Great Sword, 2. The Black Card, 3. The Darkness in Paradise, 4. Clare's Awakening, 5. Teresa of the Faint Smile)
