Peter Allison graduated from the University of Hull with a Geology B.Sc. in 1983. After a short spell as a journalist writing market surveys for Industrial Minerals Magazine he went back to university to do a Ph.D. at the University of Bristol, graduating in 1987. Following post-doctoral positions at the University of Washington�s Friday Harbor Laboratories and the Department of Geology at Kochi University, Japan, he took a faculty position at the Postgraduate Research Institute for Sedimentology at the University of Reading. Allmon is director of the Paleontological Research Institution in Ithaca, New York, and adjunct associate professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University. He is coeditor of Causes of Evolution: A Paleontological Perspective.David J. Bottjer is professor of earth sciences at the University of Southern California and the editor (with Richard K. Bambach) of two Columbia University Press book series: Critical Moments in Paleobiology and Earth History and Perspectives in Paleobiology and Earth History. He has also been editor of the journal Palaiosand currently is one of the editors of the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology.
