Joan Magretta has been working with Michael Porter for over 20 years. She is a former editor of the Harvard Business Review, where she edited Porter's classic articles "What is Strategy?" and "The Five Competitive Forces That Shape Strategy." Prior to joining HBR, Dr. Magretta was a partner at the management consulting firm of Bain & Co. She has written many influential articles on strategy and management, and in 1998 won the McKinsey Award. Her book, What Management Is (Free Press, 2002), reflects her career-long interest in the intersection between strategy and general management. Before getting her MBA at Harvard Business School in 1983, Magretta was a university professor in the… humanities. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Wisconsin, with an MA from Columbia and a PhD in English from the University of Michigan.
