J. Robert Cox (Ph.D. & M.A., University of Pittsburgh; B.A., University of Richmond) is Professor of Communication Studies and the Ecology Curriculum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His principal research and teaching foci are rhetorical theory, environmental communication, and critical study of the discourse of change agents and social movements. He is considered one of the nations leading scholar s in environmental communication and has been President of the Sierra Club twice (2000-01; 1994-1996); he hasnbsp;served onnbsp;the Board of the Directors for the Sierra Club for 12 years.nbsp;His published work includes critical studies of the rhetoric of civil rights,… antiwar protest, labor, and the environmental movement. Cox has served as Associate Editor for the Quarterly Journal of Speech and advises environmental groups on strategy in their advocacy campaigns. In addition to his teaching activities, he is called upon regularly to participate in and comment on numerous national initiatives concerning the environment.nbsp;While serving as Sierra Club President in 2000,nbsp;he campaigned with former Vice President Al Gore in the U.S. presidential election.
