Description: In Canada and the United States: Differences that Count, Fourth Edition, leading authorities compare and contrast the Canadian and the American way of doing things, without assuming that differences are increasing or decreasing or that one country is "better" than the other. They do so in the hope of creating a better understanding of the similarities and differences so that policy-makers, students, and ordinary citizens in each of the two countries may learn from the experiences of the other. From health care to crime (and punishment); from immigration to race and public policy; from tax regulations to the environment; from values to prime ministers and presidents there are as many differences as there are similarities in the way the two countries do things, and not infrequently it turns out that the similarities and differences are not as we have assumed them to be.Since the third edition was published in 2008, a great deal has happened to change the political and economic scene on both sides of the border, as well as internationally. As a result, while some chapters from the last edition are not carried into the new one, all remaining chapters have been thoroughly revised to reflect these changes-- some by new authors-- and new chapters have been added. The new chapters discuss banking and regulatory mechanisms; debt, deficits, and taxation; budgeting; foreign policy; health; parties, Congress, and Parliament; equality, opportunity, and the effects of austerity; and the legal system and the Supreme Courts. This new edition has also been reorganized into the following four sections: Values, Governance, Economic Systems, and Key Policy Challenges.
