British historian W. E. H. Lecky was born in Ireland. A foremost Victorian Whig-liberal, he gained major recognition as a literary historian for his encyclopedic study of eighteenth-century England and Ireland, History of England in the Eighteenth Century (1878--90). A combination of social and political history, the eight-volume work is a reflection of his own political beliefs.
