Salamun is undoubtedly the most outstanding among the younger Slovene poets. What sets him apart from many other talented contemporaries is his iconoclastic attitude, rare in his nation but very much like that of younger poets elsewhere. In his numerous collections since 1966, he is unconventional, daring, innovative, at times irreverent, but always urging a reevaluation of established values. His poetic world is unlike any other in Slovene letters, and he has never wavered from an intent to be different. At the same time, he has artistic power that supports his claim for originality.
