Douglas Northrop is Associate Professor of History and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan, where he directs the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. His first book, #60;i#62;Veiled Empire#60;/i#62;#60;i#62;: Gender and Power in Stalinist Central Asia#60;/i#62; (2004), won the W. Bruce Lincoln Prize and the Heldt Prize. .
