The author was born in Little Falls, New York near the scenes of this story. He first heard the tale of Hanyost from his father Edward Cooney, a local historian and a founder of the Little Falls Historical Society. After working as an English teacher and school administrator in the New York City public schools, he is currently employed as a curriculum specialist for Teachers College, Columbia University.
