His first book, Alternative Tracks: The Constitution of American Industrial Order, 1870-1916 (1994) was awarded the American Political Science Association's J. David Greenstone Award for Best Book in Politics and History. He is the recipient of fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Hagley Museum and Library, the American Philosophical Society, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
