John Lescroart was born in Houston, Texas on January 14, 1948. He started writing as a student at the University of California-Berkeley, where he majored in English. Following college and a job with a telephone company, he traveled around Europe, singing folk and country-rock music. He won the 1978 Joseph Henry Jackson best novel award for under-35 California writers with the autobiographical novel Sunburn.
