Roger Duvoisin was born in Geneva, Switzerland on August 28, 1904 and came to the United States in 1925. Duvoisin created more than forty books and illustrated more than 140 books for children. Among his more than 40 childrens books, he is best known for those featuring Veronica, the hippopotamus, and Petunia, the silly goose. In addition, he created the characters Donkey-Donkey and Hector-Penguin. He also illustrated "Happy Lion," a series written by his wife. He received several awards for his works including the Caldecott Medal in 1947 for White Snow, Bright Snow and a Caldecott Honor in 1966. He received the Society of Illustrators Award, the Rutgers Award, the Silver Medallion of the… University of Southern Mississippi and the Kerlan Award of the University of Minnesota. He died June 30, 1980 in Morristown, New Jersey.
