Description:

The Centre for Research in Social Policy carried out a unique study of the benefit information needs of newly-separated mothers and their children, observing how 30 newly-separated mothers adjusted to single parenthood. The study explored how they obtained information about the benefits system and used it in making decisions on how best to provide for their own and their children's current needs, and to plan for the future. Taking place against a background of significant policy change, most notably the introduction of the Child Support Agency, the study provides some early impressions of the impact of these changes.
