After receiving her Ph.D. in 1983, A. G. Clarke worked for a time as a freelance writer and consultant. Since 1989, she has taught at American River College, a community college in Sacramento, California, that serves a diversified student body with varied career and academic goals. She teaches courses in developmental and college writing and in literature, including introductory courses in her doctoral specialties of the novel and Victorian literature.
