Venus Williams was born in Lynwood, California on June 17, 1980. She became a professional tennis player at the age of 14, beating the player ranked number 50 in the world in her first match. She was the first African American to reach number one as a professional in either the men's or women's game. She is a multiple Grand Slam singles and doubles champion and a three-time Olympic gold medalist. She received a degree in fashion design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and launched her own athletic and casual clothing line.

Co-author Kelly E. Carter is a former sportswriter at USA Today , the Dallas Morning News , Orange County Register , and other newspapers. She segued into entertainment reporting with a correspondent position at People before adding travel and food writing to her repertoire. A contributing editor at Elite Traveler and a freelance writer, she currently writes about lifestyles, celebrities, and business, and appears regularly on the Travel Channel. She lives in her native Los Angeles.
