This textbook introduces undergraduate students of language and linguistics to the basic ideas, insights, and techniques of contemporary semantic theory. The book starts with everyday observations about word meaning and use primarily and then gradually zooms in on the question of how speakers manage to meaningfully communicate with phrases, sentences, and texts they have never come across before. Extensive English examples provide ample illustration.

Born in White Sulphur Springs, Mont. in 1939, Doig grew up along the Rocky Mountain Front where many of his stories are set. A writer of fiction and non-fiction, he has worked as a ranch hand, newspaper man, and a magazine editor. He obtained bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from Northwestern University, a Ph.D. in history from University of Washington, and holds honorary doctorates at Montana State University and Lewis and Clark College. His non-fiction works include This House of Sky (a National Book Award finalist in 1978), Winter Brothers (1980), and Heart Earth (1993). Fiction titles include English Creek (1984), Dancing at the Rascal Fair (1987), and Bucking the Sun.CANDICE OLSON is one of North America's leading designers. Her television series, Divine Design with Candice Olson, has been seen by millions. Her popular show Candice Tells All airs on HGTV in the United States and on W Network in Canada.

Holding doctorates in history, authors Dorothy T. and Clifton W. Potter Jr. have spent their professional careers teaching at Lynchburg College.
