If you are going to use type in a design project, you will probably have lots of questions - what is type? What is a typeface? What is a font? How do you go about choosing the best typeface for a design project? Basics Typography: Understanding Type sets out to answer these questions by looking at the basic components used to create typographic matter. It gives readers the knowlege they need to understand type in order to make the best-informed design decisions. This book looks closer at what most take for granted and offers an illuminating insight into this key area of visual communication.

Michael graduated from the University of Plymouth, Exeter School of Art and Design with First class BA(Hons) in Design: Typography which included some time spent studying at Arnhem in the Netherlands. He gained a distinction for his MA from Central Saint Martins in Design Studies where his major project was in type design.   Michael was a director within a successful graphic design company before returning to education to teach full-time at the University of Portsmouth.   He is a passionate advocate of the development of typographic study within graphic design.   He is currently working towards a PhD at Central Saint Martins, London researching Contemporary Processes of Text Typeface Design, supervised by Professor Phil Baines, dr Catherine Dixon and Professor Janet McDonnell.   Michael has given talks about his work at various institutions including Central Saint Martins and the University of Reading. He has been invited to talk at international conferences including ATypI Dublin 2010. His work has also been published and exhibited internationally.   He is Course Leader for MA Graphic Design at the University of Portsmouth and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
