Type on Screen explores the principles and practices of typographic design for use in web sites, mobile applications, electronic publications, and film and video. This practical, hands-on guide shows how classic concepts of typographic form and structure intersect with screen-based technologies and principles of user experience and animation. The book will talk about how to choose typefaces for the screen and how to use CSS to style beautiful, functional text and navigation. Sections on electronic books and magazines will diagram emerging paradigms of publication design in the age of tablet computing, showing readers ways to creatively engage these new models. A chapter about type and motion will apply principles of animation to text, exploring how to use changes in scale, color, position, and form to dramatize content without distracting and annoying viewers. The book concludes with a chapter showing how typography can interact with code-based operations to generate new forms and experiences.Edited and authored by a team of graduate faculty and students at Maryland Institute College of Art, Type on Screen will be available as both a print and digital publication. An accompanying website will provide live demonstrations of screen-based hierarchies, interfaces, logotypes, and animations. The book will be illustrated throughout with original demonstrations created by our team and outstanding examples drawn from the international design community. Reinforced with do’s, don’ts, and basic exercises, Type on Screen will serve as a textbook for college-level courses in web design, interaction design, and motion graphics, as well as a useful guide for any designer or developer seeking practical and inspirational information about typography for the digital age. The book will establish basic principles within a rapidly changing media environment. While Type on Screen is not a software manual, it will be grounded in accessible, real-world practices.
