This fall, a small record label based in downtown Durham, North Carolina will turn 20. Merge Records, the label started by two twenty-year-olds on the floor of a bedroom, have much to celebrate: two of their bands hit Billboard's Top Ten list in 2007; the band Arcade Fire has sold over 1 million copies of Neon Bible. Spoon played during the Grammy's opening, Superchunk was asked to headline The Daily Show's 10th anniversary party. The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs has become a contemporary classic. Our Noise tells the story of the little record label that defies everything you've read and heard not just about the music business, but about small independent companies all over the world. Merge Records, with just thirteen employees, is not just surviving, but wildly successful. So here at last, is the story of Merge as it was launched in Laura's bedroom, and by those bands who were discovered and given a chance, as well as by those bands who stayed with Merge even when the big record companies came calling with promises of more money and fame. Including everything from interviews, to photos of bands, to album cover art and other memorabilia, this is the story of what happens when the good guys win.

Laura Ballance plays bass in Superchunk and formed with Mac the Merge Records label. She lives in Durham with her husband and daughter.
