Leslie Marmon Silko was born in 1948 in Albuquerque, New Mexico of mixed ancestry-Luguna Pueblo, Mexican and Caucasian. She grew up on the Laguna Pueblo Reservation and attended Bureau of Indian Affairs schools before receiving her B.A. from the University of New Mexico in 1969. She briefly attended law school before deciding to pursue a career as a writer. While writing, Marmon Silko taught at the Navajo Community College in Arizona and at the University of New Mexico. She has produced poetry, short stories, novels and screenplays, often blending traditional elements into modern settings. Her books include Laguna Woman, Ceremony, and Yellow Woman, and her stories have appeared in many publications. Leslie Marmon Sliko has received a five-year MacArthur Foundation grant to pursue her writing. She is a professor of English at the University of Arizona, Tucson.
