Portuguese author, Julieta Timane, was born in Mozambique and has lived in several European and Asian countries including Italy, the UK and Japan. She now calls Malaysia home. The way she writes is strongly influenced by her experiences in internationally diverse, multicultural and multi-ethnic environments. Julieta'a fascination with writing began during early childhood when she read My Sweet Orange Tree by Brazilian Author Jos Mauro Vasconcelos. This beautiful book about life, children, loneliness and the power of imagination was enlightening and triggered her passion to read and write. When she was around 13 years old, Julieta's grandparents gave her a typewriter on which she would… spend hours creating little stories. Characters and emotions soon grew into short rhyming stories and, before long, she was writing poems. Reading and writing soon become an integral part of her life. The opportunity to dedicate more time to writing came when Julieta moved to Japan in 2010. Living in a different culture opened her eyes to the differences in our major cultural values such as respect towards others, nature and animals and the way we take care of our family members. It was this realisation that gave her the initial idea for Miss Flower and The Little Globetrotters, a book about a teacher who teaches a multicultural, multi-ethnic class about universal values. The students come from ten different countries including Japan, India, Jamaica, UK, New Zealand, Portugal, and in every lesson each one of them is given the opportunity to speak up and share their own points of view. They are taught that there is no right or wrong, but that communicating is everything. They are in an unidentified location and the story is told through rhyme, which is how Julieta first started writing. Julieta's children's books are engaging, witty and beautifully-written, while the characters and emotions are brought to life with beautiful illustrations. Through words she takes young readers on a fabulous journey, which not only has the ability to entertain, but also to provide children with thought-provoking material that encourages them to ask and answer some of the more meaningful questions about life.
