In addition to school-based leadership, she also served in the central office as a director of program development. She has received recognition as both 1988 Virginia Counselor of the Year and 1998 Virginia Assistant Principal of the Year, and she is a popular speaker at state and national conferences on the issues of instructional leadership and improvement. She is the former founding co-director of the Longwood University Principalsrsquo; Institute and Longwood Center for School Improvement. Her scholarly publications appear in The School Counselor, NASSP Bulletin, NASSP Principal Leadership, NASSP Schools in the Middle, and Phi Delta Kappa Fastback Series. Her book, Teacher Quality, Teaching Quality, and School Improvement, coauthored with Dr. Owings, is scheduled for Winter 2003 publication. She also serves on the NASSP Bulletin Advisory Committee and is the immediate past president of the Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
