This is a concise history of the Arab-Israeli conflict from its origins to the present day. The book provides a careful, balanced introduction to this complex dispute and the different parties involved. The volume is organised in three parts. The first sets out the problems of definition, identifying the key players in the conflict and describing the different ways in which both sides of the dispute have presented themselves and their opponents. It explores the extent to which the problem centers on religion, territory and/or national self-determination. It also discusses the role of international politicians, religious leaders and media commentators. The second part of the volume covers the development of the conflict, focussing on flashpoints such as the 1917 Balfour Declaration in favor of a Jewish national home in Palestine, the 1936-1939 Arab Rebellion, the Six Day War of 1967, and, most recently Israel′s bombardments of Lebanon in 2006 in response to the extremist activities of Hezbollah. Throughout the account the author presents the different perspectives of those involved, encouraging the reader to think critically and sensitively rather than to favor one ′side′ or another.A final section examines the current approaches to conflict resolution in the area and assesses the likelihood of a peaceful solution.
