Ludwig Boltzmann, an Austrian theoretical physicist, was born and educated in Vienna. Boltzmann moved from post to post throughout Europe and visited the United States three times. Independent of the pioneering research of James Clerk Maxwell, Boltzmann developed the kinetic theory of gases.
