Born in Cornwall and brought up as a scientist, Golding changed to English literature after two years at Oxford University. Interested in classical Greek and archeology, he says his literary influences have been Euripides and the anonymous Anglo-Saxon author of The Battle of Maldon. E. M. Forster called Golding's Lord of the Flies (1954) "the outstanding novel of the year." In the United States, it got off to a slow start, however, until the paperback edition of 1959 led to its popularity among college students.
