The six essays in this volume all deal with the relationship of mystical experience to ordinary life. The title essay on "cosmic consciousness" includes the author's account of his own ventures into this inward realm. "Instinct, Intelligence, and Anxiety" is a study of the paradoxes of self-consciousness; "Spiritually and Sensuality," a lively discussion of the false opposition of spirit and matter; and "The New Alchemy," a balanced account of states of consciousness akin to spiritual experience induced by the aid of lysergic acid. The collection also includes the text of Watts' celebrated pamphlet, "Beat Zen, Square Zen, and Zen."

Alan Wilson Watts was born in England in 1915. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and the Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Illinois. Watts was an editor, minister, professor, graduate school dean, and research fellow of Harvard University. Watts has written over twenty books, primarily concerned with Eastern thought and Zen Buddhism in the West. He has lectured at colleges and universities as well, and created more than 500 radio talks which have been taped and circulated among non-profit and educational organizations. Watts died in 1973.

Alan Watts, one-time professional meteorologist, has spent considerable time studying wind changes and short-term alterations in the weather. This, combined with his enthusiasm for sailing which began with the sea scouts, has enabled him to assist people to read the weather from the signs in the sky.
