Jan Dickerson was a full colonel in the U.S. Army. Her travels gave her the opportunity to experience a multitude of disciplines, from reining and barrel racing to hunting and dressage. One thing remained constant: the principles of good horsemanship are the same regardless of discipline. Her books have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity since her death in 2007, and "Training Your Own Young Horse" is now available for the first time in paperback. Col. Dickerson was born and raised in Texas, enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in 1949, and served as press officer on the staff of the Secretary of Defense during the Korean conflict. During a period of inactive service, she was a journalist with… the Kansas City Star. A versatile equestrian, she showed saddle horses, participated in Western events, hunted, and served as district commissioner of the U.S. Pony Club. She raised and trained many horses of her own. Her published works also include "Make the Most of Your Horse" and "A New Look at Classical Dressage."
