Karen Miller was born in Vancouver, Canada. Her parents moved the family to Australia when she was 2. She received a B. A. in communications from the Sydney Institute of Technology and a Master's degree in children's literature from Macquarie University. In 2005, her first novel, The Innocent Mage, was published. Her other works include the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series, the Godspeaker Trilogy, and novels for the Stargate SG-1 series and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series. Empress of Mijak and The Riven Kingdom received the James Tiptree, Jr. Awards. She also writes the Rogue Agent series under the pseudonym K. E. Mills.
